A Programmable Thermostat Can Benefit Your Home

A Programmable Thermostat Can Benefit Your HomeIt is a fact that the heating and cooling systems in your home make up the bulk of your home’s energy usage. However, there are a few things that you can do to reduce the energy consumption in your house. One easy fix is installing a programmable thermostat.

You can save money on your heating and cooling bills by simply resetting your thermostat when you are asleep or away from home. You can do this automatically without sacrificing comfort by installing an automatic setback or programmable thermostat. According to, “Switching from a manual to a programmable thermostat is one simple way to save as much as $180 a year.” Most programmable thermostats can be easily installed and are quite simple to use.

The United States Department of Energy recommends a programmable thermostat and explains, “Using a programmable thermostat, you can adjust the times you turn on the heating or air-conditioning according to a pre-set schedule. Programmable thermostats can store and repeat multiple daily settings (six or more temperature settings a day) that you can manually override without affecting the rest of the daily or weekly program.”

Installing a programmable thermostat in your home will let you run a scheduled heating and cooling program without having to remember to manually change your settings throughout the day.

Recommended Settings

The lower you keep the interior temperature of your home during the winter months, the slower the heat loss. So the longer your house remains at the lower temperature, the more energy you save, because your house has lost less energy than it would have at the higher temperature. The same concept applies to raising your thermostat setting in the summer or warmer months. A higher interior temperature will slow the flow of heat into your house, saving energy on air conditioning.

Thermostat Can Benefit Your HomeWinter and Cooler Months

You can help to conserve energy in the winter by setting the thermostat to 68°F while you’re awake and setting it lower while your family is asleep or away from home.

Summer Months

In the summer, follow the same strategy with central air conditioning by keeping your house warmer than normal when you are away, and setting the thermostat to 78°F (26°C) only when you are at home and need cooling. Set your thermostat at as high a temperature as comfortably possible and ensure humidity control if needed.

In summary, the lower the difference between the indoor and outdoor temperatures, the lower your overall cooling bill will be.
