Essential AC Maintenance Tips to Keep Your Air Conditioner in Tip-Top Conditions

Air conditioning is vital for keeping your Nassau County home cool and comfortable; without it, things can get pretty uncomfortable and even downright dangerous rather quickly. Like any other appliance or system, however, an air conditioner needs to be maintained. Without proper maintenance, the system can become strained, it will need to work harder and consume more energy, and your utility bills can suffer. Even worse, a neglected HVAC system is more prone to breaking down, and when that happens, you and your family can suffer.

To ensure your air conditioning system continues to function properly, operate efficiently, and deliver reliably cool air, here’s a look at some essential AC maintenance tips from a leading Long Beach, NY air conditioner repair, maintenance, and installation company.

Change the Filters

The most crucial AC maintenance tip to ensure the system provides optimal cooling is cleaning and changing the filters. When the filters are dirty and clogged, airflow is obstructed and the efficiency of the system will be compromised. Furthermore, when airflow is blocked, air can bypass the filter, and dirt and debris can be deposited directly into the evaporator coils, which can reduce the heat absorption capacity of the coils. Just by exchanging dirty filters for clean ones will improve cooling capacity and reduce energy consumption by as much as 15%.

Clean the Condenser and Evaporator Coils

Dirt collects on both the condenser and evaporator coils of an HVAC system. Eventually, the dirt buildup can become so dense that airflow will be reduced, and in turn, heat absorption is reduced. While a clean filter will help to reduce the speed at which dirt accumulates on these coils, both should be checked and cleaned as needed.

Check the Coil Fins

Long Beach, NY

The evaporator and condenser coils are covered with aluminum fins, and while durable, they can easily bend. If the fins are bent, airflow through the coils can be blocked. To avoid this problem and maintain the efficiency of your system, checking the coil fins is a vital part of AC maintenance. If they're bent, a simple tool called a fin comb, which most Long Beach, NY air conditioner repair, maintenance, and installation companies sell, can be used to literally comb and straighten and almost completely restore the coil fins on your Nassau County HVAC system.

Check the Condensate Drain Lines

A central air conditioning system does more than just cool your Nassau County home; it also reduces the humidity by drawing moisture from the air. The moisture turns into condensation. A condensate drain line directs that moisture out of your home. Dirt and debris can accumulate in the drain line, and when that happens, the unit’s ability to reduce humidity levels can become compromised. Additionally, excess moisture can result in discoloration on the walls, floors, and other surfaces inside your home. Periodically passing a stiff wire through the drain channels can help to reduce the risk of these issues.

Hire a Pro

Rather than doing all of the above AC maintenance tips yourself, hiring a professional Long Beach, NY air conditioner repair company is highly recommended. Not only will a professional be able to deliver better results, but if any issues are spotted, they’ll be able to make the necessary repairs. Plus, leaving this all-important job to a licensed and experienced HVAC technician is a lot easier for you!

Some information about Long Beach, NY

Long Beach is a city in Nassau County, in New York, United States. It takes up a central section of the Long Beach Barrier Island, which is the westernmost of the outer barrier islands off Long Island’s South Shore. As of the 2010 United States census, the city population was 33,275, and 33,454 in 2019. It was incorporated in 1922, and is nicknamed ‘The City By the Sea’. The Long Beach Barrier Island is surrounded by Reynolds Channel to the north, east and west, and the Atlantic Ocean to the south.

The city of Long Beach’s first inhabitants were the Algonquian-speaking Lenape, who sold the area to English colonists in 1643. From that time, while the barrier island was used by baymen and farmers for fishing and harvesting salt hay, no one lived there year-round for more than two centuries. The bark Mexico, carrying Irish immigrants to New York, ran ashore on New Year’s Day.

Austin Corbin, a builder from Brooklyn, was the first to attempt to develop the island as a resort. He formed a partnership with the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) to finance the New York and Long Beach Railroad Co., which laid track from Lynbrook to Long Beach in 1880. That same year, Corbin opened Long Beach Hotel, a row of 27 cottages along a 1,100-foot (340 m) strip of beach, which he claimed was the world’s largest hotel. In its first season, the railroad brought 300,000 visitors to Long Island. By the next spring, tracks had been laid the length of the island, but they were removed in 1894 after repeated washouts from winter storms.

In 1906, William H. Reynolds, a 39-year-old real estate developer and former state senator, became involved in the area. Reynolds had already developed four Brooklyn neighborhoods (Bedford–Stuyvesant, Borough Park, Bensonhurst, and South Brownsville), as well as Coney Island’s Dreamland, the world’s largest amusement park at the time. Reynolds also owned a theatre and produced plays.
