Tips to Keep Your Central Air Running Smoothly All Season

Regular cleaning and maintenance can keep your central air conditioning running smoothly and efficiently throughout the warm spring and summer months.  A well-maintained central air conditioning unit will remain energy-efficient and long-lasting.

According to DIYnetwork.com, “Keep your air conditioner well maintained and you’ll not only save money on energy, but you’ll also extend its lifespan, saving money on costly early replacement. A central air conditioning system needs regular attention to be sure it’s operating at the highest efficiency.” While nothing can replace the experience and expertise of a professional HVAC technician, in addition to scheduling routine, professional maintenance services, there are a few tips that homeowners can follow to ensure that their air conditioning system runs smoothly all summer long.

Shade the Outdoor Unit

Create shade for your outdoor air conditioning unit. Shade can be created using tall hedges or trees or even a tall fenced area. The hotter the unit gets, the harder it works so shading the outdoor unit will make it run more effectively.

Remove Any Debris

Remove any debris including leaves, pollen, and twigs from the top and sides of outdoor air-conditioning unit on a weekly basis during the summer months.  Don’t allow the lawn mower to spray any grass clippings onto or into the unit.

Get a Programmable Thermostat

Programmable thermostats allow you to set temperatures for various times throughout the day and automatically lower or increase the temperature within your home. This feature can help to save you money and manage your cooling automatically.

Inspect the Air Filter

According to the Department of Energy, “Homeowners should inspect, clean, or change air filters once a month in their central air conditioner, furnace, and/or heat pump. A professional technician can show you how to do this. Keep in mind that a dirty filter can increase energy costs and damage your equipment, leading to early failure.”

Check the Refrigerant Level

The Department of Energy also recommends that you check your central air conditioner’s refrigerant level and adjust it if necessary. Too much or too little refrigerant can make your system run less efficiently, increasing energy costs and reducing the life of the equipment.

Schedule Professional Maintenance Services

You can certainly help to prolong the life and increase the efficiency of your system if you follow some of the tips listed above.  However, it’s always a good idea to hire an experienced HVAC company to inspect and perform any necessary maintenance on your air conditioning system before the summer season begins.
