What to do when the heat goes out
Before you call, check three things. Make sure the thermostat is set to heat and above room temperature. Check that the boiler’s power switch, often a red switch near the unit or at the top of the basement stairs, is on. Look at the pressure gauge: if it reads much lower than usual, the system may have lost water, and a technician should find out why.
If you smell gas, do not touch switches or try to relight anything. Leave the house and call your gas utility or 911 from outside. For everything else, call us at 718-428-6987, day or night, and tell us what the boiler is doing: no heat, banging pipes, leaking water or a pilot that will not stay lit. When a repair still makes sense
Most boiler breakdowns are repairable. Igniters, circulator pumps, valves, controls and small leaks can usually be fixed without replacing the whole unit. Replacement starts to make sense when the boiler is near the end of its working life, the heat exchanger or tank is leaking, repairs have become a yearly event, or fuel bills keep climbing for the same comfort.
